Human trafficking is a pervasive issue that thrives on the vulnerability of people. The phenomenon remains a major scourge in Zimbabwe. The country has witnessed a surge in human trafficking cases. There is a growing realization that prevention efforts and strategies to combat human trafficking should be grounded on a data driven approach. Despite the above realization, very little information, if any, is available on the emerging routes, patterns, and dynamics of human trafficking in Zimbabwe rendering the country’s efforts ineffective. Human trafficking is ever evolving. This study examines the emerging routes, patterns, and dynamics of human trafficking based on the lived experiences of recently rescued men and women. Employing a phenomenological research design, in which in-depth interviews were conducted with one hundred and thirty-seven victims of trafficking. Emerging key themes include: (1) O.R Tambo International preferred fly out area, (2) Recruitment Network themed on relations and trusted individuals and close relatives, (3) Deceptive Promises and Misinformation, (4) rerouting of trafficking journeys, (5) International Trafficking Economic reasons: scamming and unrealistic performance targets, (6) regret and persistent worry, (7) self- blame and difficulty with self-forgiveness, (8) Government Mistrust and Unconcerned Stance, and (9) isolation, dehumanization, and challenges with family reintegration. The findings reveal deep-seated mistrust of the government by victims of trafficking. There is an urgent need for sustained psychosocial support. This presentation provides insights into how human trafficking is evolving in low resourced economies and the critical call for a holistic approach to meeting the needs of victims.
