Jamie-Lee

This narrative presentation shares the lived experience of Jamie-Lee, a survivor of human trafficking, who was recruited online in 2019. What initially appeared to be a safe and genuine connection gradually evolved into a situation marked by manipulation, coercion, and exploitation. At the time, Jamie-Lee did not recognize the experience as human trafficking, a common reality that allows this crime to remain hidden, misunderstood, and often unreported. As the grooming process intensified, Jamie-Lee became increasingly isolated and emotionally controlled. Fear, confusion, and shame created powerful barriers to seeking help or leaving the situation. These dynamics made it difficult for others to recognize the exploitation and contributed to systems responding with punishment rather than protection. During this period, Jamie-Lee was criminally charged for actions that were a direct result of trafficking-related coercion. Rather than being identified as a victim, they experienced profound injustice within the legal system, which further reinforced trauma, stigma, and silence. This presentation also explores how some emerging anti-trafficking policies, including proposed legislation in states like Colorado, may appear protective on the surface but can unintentionally further criminalize survivors. Without survivor-informed revisions and trauma-informed approaches, these policies risk punishing victims for actions connected to their exploitation rather than providing meaningful protection and support. After escaping the situation, Jamie-Lee began a complex process of healing and self-reclamation. Through survivor-centered services and advocacy organizations, they gained a deeper understanding of trafficking dynamics and victim criminalization. Today, Jamie-Lee is an advocate who uses lived experience to educate others about online recruitment, prevention, and the urgent need for survivor-informed responses.
