Human trafficking is a pervasive and often hidden crime that intersects significantly with the healthcare system. Many individuals experiencing trafficking come into contact with healthcare professionals while still under exploitation, yet the signs frequently go unrecognized. This presentation will explore the critical role the healthcare industry plays in identifying, responding to, and preventing human trafficking. Participants will gain an understanding of the dynamics of both sex and labor trafficking, common indicators that may present in clinical settings, and the barriers that prevent victims from seeking or accepting help. The session will highlight trauma-informed, survivor-centered approaches and provide practical tools for screening, safe intervention, and referral. Additionally, the presentation will examine systemic challenges within healthcare environments, including time constraints, lack of training, and ethical considerations. Through case examples and best practices, attendees will leave better equipped to recognize signs, respond appropriately, and collaborate with community partners to support individuals impacted by trafficking. This session is designed for healthcare professionals, administrators, and allied service providers seeking to strengthen their capacity to respond effectively and compassionately to human trafficking within their practice.
