This research presentation explores the intersection of cybersecurity, data science, and regional collaboration to dismantle human trafficking networks. While technology is often a tool for exploitation, Dr. Szakonyi demonstrates its potential for intervention through a multidisciplinary framework. The study addresses the systemic barriers preventing effective data sharing between stakeholders and examines the complex role that technical ecosystems play in this crisis. The research is driven by three critical pillars: understanding how traffickers weaponize technology for their operations, determining how we can pivot those same technical and data capabilities toward anti-trafficking efforts, and identifying the holistic models required to make these solutions sustainable and successful. The methodology utilizes a multi-layered approach that combines artificial intelligence and machine learning to analyze patterns in public datasets alongside qualitative data to understand the broader environmental context. Based on these findings, it is evident that a lack of standardized data and collaboration remains a significant hurdle. These insights are translated into meaningful solutions through the "Platform of Freedom," a model currently being operationalized in the St. Louis region. The presentation concludes by translating these theoretical findings into a call to action through the "Platform of Freedom." By bridging the gap between technical solutions and anti-trafficking policy, Dr. Szakonyi advocates for the creation of secure, regional data-sharing hubs. The session highlights ongoing efforts to secure infrastructure funding in St. Louis, offering a scalable model for law enforcement and service providers to move from fragmented tactical responses to a unified, data-driven strategy for prevention and rescue.
Annamaria Szakonyi is a professor and tech expert bridging technology with policy to build resilient, tech-forward community solutions. A Human Trafficking Collaborative Network board member in St. Louis, she has advised UN-level initiatives and national research grants applying data and technology to dismantle trafficking networks and strengthen community resilience.
