Generational Exploitation & Human Trafficking: Bound, Broken, and Fighting Back

Fri, September 25 | 1:45 PM EDT– 2:45 PM EDT
Topic: Experience, Direct Service | Knowledge Level: Intermediate

Jackie Carlino, CCTP, INHC, LPC (she/her) and Kellie Ann Peterson, MDiv (she/her)

Jackie Carlino and Kellie Ann Peterson present a clinically informed, lived-experience account of multigenerational childhood sexual exploitation, including involvement in the pornography industry and its long-term mental health impact. Kellie Ann will describe how early trauma contributed to undiagnosed conditions such as complex post-traumatic stress, which impaired her ability to recognize risk and protect her children from being drawn into childhood human trafficking. Both Kellie Ann and Jackie will outline the pivotal transitions in their lives that disrupted this generational cycle, including intensive therapy, insight, and healthier relational patterns. Their presentation integrates personal narrative with clinical application, highlighting evidence-informed and adjunctive modalities such as art therapy, brain-based synchronization techniques, prayer-based practices, EFT tapping, and equine-assisted therapy. Jackie Carlino will further explore the added complexity of attention- deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) within the trauma recovery process, particularly in relation to regulation, engagement, and treatment accessibility. She will also discuss the development of alternative therapeutic environments—including nature-based and experiential settings—that support clients who struggle in traditional office-based models. Kellie Ann will expand on prevention and early intervention, equipping parents and caregivers with practical tools to recognize vulnerability, support healing within the home, and foster resilience in children impacted by trauma. Together, they offer comprehensive frameworks that bridge clinical understanding, experiential insight, and innovative approaches to trauma recovery. Recommendations include prioritizing screening, integrating somatic and relational therapies, supporting caregivers through education and community resources, and creating flexible environments that increase safety, engagement, and long-term healing outcomes.

Trigger Warning: This presentation contains information (written, spoken, or visual) that may be triggering or (re)traumatizing to attendees.
